Portable Toilet -

Industrial Design

The Travel Kenny is a portable cardboard toilet aimed primarily at removing the ecological impact of defecating whilst exploring the outback, however its use potential is much greater.

Camping was the chosen target market as it would single-handedly create a product that was extremely versatile. The specific track which was used as a ‘testing location’ was Mt Cougal in the SEQ hinterland. This trail takes roughly 6 hours to complete and involves some steep sections, dense and wet low growing foliage and windy peaks.

This informed the design in several ways. Firstly, the hollowed and arched legs were designed to reduce weight whilst not taking away but strengthening its rigidity and adaptability. It allows the toilet to resist wind gusts more effectively, as air can pass through the base rather than hitting a solid wall, and they also make the toilet more adaptable to variable terrain which will inevitably be encountered on the trail. This toilet can also be used as makeshift toilet in developing areas of the world as well, with its lightweight build and cost effectiveness of the materials.
